Discovery Hut and Balloons

Last night I went to release the weather balloon again, but this time I released it and Tess took a photo for me! It’s something different to do around the base.

We have spent most of the day testing some techniques for our project. We had to pitch our ideas today and have an abstract for the instructors, luckily after we set up our questions Tess did a great job putting an abstract together so we had time for trying things in the lab!

We will have to improvise with the available tools to obtain the gut contents of amphipods, but I am sure we will be able to work something out!

We took our group photo today in front of the Discovery hut, and had a tour of the hut! It was impressive being inside the hot and seeing the original seal carcass, the soot everywhere, the smell of it can really make you realize what it was like when the explorers were in there. I was especially pleased to have a chance to know what the place smelled like, not because of the smell itself – it isn’t good – but because it makes the experiences that I read in the Endurance be more alive. Even though I was reading about Shackleton’s party that was camping on ice floes in the Weddell Sea, the book describes similar conditions.
